Identify the challenging aspects for registered nurses who administer psychotropic medication to the consumer who poses a significant risk of harm to self and/or others, in promoting recovery-oriented practice.

Your essay must utilize a range of national and international contemporary literature, to create an argument that identifies the complexities of this issue.

The first assessment task is an essay, so you will need to follow the same structure of introduction, body, and conclusion as all other essay format assessment.

This is an academic essay written in the third person. It means that it is not a reflection on your personal perspective.

You will need to search the literature to find out what is the controversy regarding the use of psychotropic medications or the impacts of seclusion to consumers and healthcare professionals alike. You should consider the pros and cons as noted in the literature and then consider the challenges for the nurse (again using the literature to guide your discussion of this topic). You will also need to link both points for your topic throughout the essay.

You should use a range of sources other than the Mental Health Act. You might not be able to find enough information and legislation regarding psychotropic medications in the Mental Health Act, so you will need to rely on the literature. Consumer advocate groups, contemporary models of practice (such as recovery-oriented practice and trauma-informed care) can be used and for example recovery principles may support the notion of not using coercive practices, etc.

You need to make sure you read the rubric carefully before starting to plan the assessment.

You should access relevant government documents to support your discussion- especially as it relates to government policy (e.g. National initiatives to reduce seclusion and restraint/international policy (e.g. UN human rights policy of people who experience mental illness). However, remember if you use fact sheets and websites as factual content- remember they are secondary and tertiary sources. They have used the literature to populate content. You should look for the original sources linked to the content in the web-page or fact sheet. Your best sources are the primary evidence-based literature.

You can use textbooks but remember they are not original sources- they are useful to gain a grasp of the issues and find relevant literature from the reference list at the end of chapters.

Ideally, your reference list may contain 2-3 government sources, 2-3 textbooks and the remainder of the 20 references 2000 words) are from original peer-reviewed research literature.

You can start by breaking down each point in your topic and then develop your responses to those points. From there you should be able to link the two so that it flows and reads smoothly.

You will find a large number of evidences in your database search as both of those topics have been researched extensively in recent years (and to date). It might even make it easier if you read a few papers about your topic so you can get an idea for the contemporary practices and issues present.
