Description
The fall of Soviet communism in the early 1990s had ripple effects throughout Europe and Central Asia, not least in the Balkans, where it led to the end of the country of Yugoslavia, a multicultural Balkan state that had functioned with relative autonomy since the 1940s. From the former Yugoslavia came a number of Independent states, including the Republic of Macedonia, a country of two million people sharing borders with Greece, Serbia, Kosovo, Bulgaria, and Albania.
From its inception, the Republic of Macedonia found Itself under tremendous pressure from the much more powerful government of Greece, but not for anything having to do with trade, immigration, or military matters. The Greek government very much want the Macedonian government to change its country’s name. Huh? Almost 20 years later, Macedonia finally agreed, formally renaming itself North Macedonia.
To prepare for this assignment, please do the following:
1. Review pp. 253-258 in your textbook.
2. Read the New Statesman article “North Macedonia: The Long History Behind the Country’s New Name.”
3. Watch the brief news segments from PBS News Hour and Al Jazeera.
4. Take a look at the “best practices” document from a few modules ago, if you haven’t already.
When you’re ready, write a multi-paragraph essay not less than 500 words in length in response to the following question:
Why did Greece want Macedonia to change its name? Why did Macedonia finally agree?
