For Assignment 1 I chose to respond to Question 2 relating to the skills required for a business or systems analyst. I found the researching of job advertisements and position descriptions, weekly content and text book readings interesting and look forward to your feedback on my comparison and explanation of these roles.
Week one’s topic introduced us to the skills required to undertake the roles of systems or business analyst. In researching job advertisements for these two roles I reviewed several position descriptions relating to these roles and found that many skills required were comparable across both roles with a number of the position descriptions appearing to be interchangeable.

While I found there was common skills across both the system analyst and business analyst role, these skills are used in differing ways to meet the requirements and tasks associated with the roles. Individual specialist skills are also required for each role.
In simple terms, a systems analyst uses IT systems to assist the organisation achieve its strategic goals. They design and develop systems by configuring hardware and software to achieve efficiencies and improved outcomes often identified by a business analyst. Tasks associated with these skills are: consulting with users and management to determine the needs of the system; designing systems to meet the business goals; specifying inputs and formatting outputs; and overseeing implementation, co- ordinating testing and validating system performance. I noted that employers generally sought bachelor qualifications in a technical field such as information technology, information systems or computer science.
The main focus of a business analyst is to improve business processes, productivity and gain efficiencies by using technology. This is where the business analyst interacts with the systems analyst, although having a knowledge of systems is beneficial in achieving success for a business analyst. Tasks associated with these skills are analysing business processes, making recommendations for improvements or solutions through customising existing technology or new technology; liaising between the business and other stakeholders (internal and external) including the systems analyst and IT; developing business and software requirements; data management; and quality assurance. I noted that employers sought bachelor qualifications in a business field such as business administration, business analytics and information technology.
Whilst employers sought degree qualifications for both system analyst and business analyst roles, also considered essential was industry experience along with financial knowledge. Salaries for these positions were comparable and upwards of $100,000 depending on whether in private companies or public organisations.
From my research, overall I consider the systems analyst role requires a more technical in-depth knowledge associated with IT hardware and software whilst the business analyst requires a more business focus concentrating on complexities of business problems and identifying continuous improvement opportunities through the use of technology.
